Please take notice that the undersigned will present a petition for a writ of Habeas Corpus in the above cause a copy of which petition is herewith served upon you, to the Honorable C.H.Hanford Judge of the above entitled Court at his Court room in the Federal Building in the city of Seattle, King county, Washington at the hour of 2 'oclock in the afternoon of the 6th day of June, A.D.1912.

In re Petition of Rose Baker for a Writ of Habeas Corpus.

Petition.

To the Honorable C.H.Hanford United States District Judge:

The petition of the above named petitioner, Rose Baker, respectfully shows to your Honor:

1.
That she is a citizen of the United States and a resident of the City of Seattle, King County, Washington.

That she is unlawfully restrained and deprived of her liberty by acting Chief of Police John Sullivan of said city of Seattle, and your petitioner is now confined in the city jail of said city.

That the facts constituting said unlawful restraint are as follow: On towit, the night of the 3rd day of June, A.D.1912 in said city of Seattle, your petitioner was forcibly arrested while asleep in her own room by one Humphrey, a police officer of said city, he, the said Humphrey then and there acting without warrant or authority of law in that at that time no complaint of any kind had been filed with any court or magistrate whomsoever, and without any writing or warrant whatsoaver; that thereopon your petitioner was forcibly taken by said officer and incarcerated in the city jail of said city where she now is.

That on towit,

That on towit, the 4th day of June, A.D.1912, your petitioner was by said officer and acting Chief of Police taken before Honorable John B. Gordon Justice of the Peace for Seattle precinct and also Municipal Judge of said city where was filed against her on the same day, towit, the 4th day of June, A.D. 1912, at about the hour of 1:30 in the afternoon of said day, a complaint to which was attached a purported warrant of arrest, charging your petitioner with being wilfully idle, said charge constituting an alleged misdemeaner under the ordinances of said city. That your petitioner entered a plea of guilty to this charge and asked the court then and there to impose and pronounce judgement.But the court contrary to and against the protest of your petitioner refused and still refuses to pronounce judgment but on the contrary continued the cause for the fault of furnishing which, your petitioner was remanded to prison where she now is.

That your petitioner as a citizen of the United States is being unlawfully deprived of her liberty in violation of her rights as guaranteed by the Constitution of the United States, and provides among other things that "no person shall be deprived of life, liberty or property without due process of law.

WHEREFORE your petitioner prays for anorder for a Writ of Habeas Corpus directing said acting Chief of Police to produce the person of your petitioner together with the cause of her detention before your Honor at such time as may be designated.
