Sometime in the middle of 1924, Mary Peterson was detained by Seattle Immigration Agents. On December 9th, 1924, Peterson was ordered to be deported because she was "a person liable to become a public charge." Peterson then filed a writ of habeas corpus on December 16th for herself and three other immigrants that were ordered to be deported, J. A. Peterson (no relation to Mary Peterson), Frank Berry, and Margaret Berry. On January 9th, 1925, Judge Cushman granted the writ and ordered the release of Mary Peterson, J. A. Peterson, and the Berrys.
