Sam Hop was a Chinese laborer and resident of the United States. In January 1881, he left the United States to visit China. When he returned, he was apprehended by the collector of customs H. F. Bucher. On August 28, 1885, Sam, Ali Tek, and other petitioners referred to as “Chinese subjects” petitioned for writs of habeas corpus. The judge ordered the respondent (Bucher) to bring the petitioners before the court. Their fates are unknown.
