On January 20, 1917, with no formal legal proceedings begun against him, Joseph O. Burger, Ranurez's attorney, filed a writ of habeas corpus against the Douglas County sheriff, Michael L. Clark, who produced Ranurez in court on January 24 in front of judge Willis G. Sears. A writ of return was filed on January 26, 1917, but the fate of Ranurez is unknown, except for the fact that a man with his name was buried in Omaha on March 27, 1918.
