To Hon C.C. Hewitt Chief Justice of W T and Judge of the 2nd Judicial District

Sir in obedience to the writ of Habeas Corpus served upon me in the case of James Riley commanding and requiring me to be and appear before your Honor this day. with the body of the said James Riley I now produce him before your honor to do and receive what shall be ordered concerning him I would further state that as the sheriff of Pierce County I hold the body of the said James Riley under prass[?] issued from the District Court of the 2nd Judicial District and in default of bail to appear and answer at the next Term of the District Court for the 2nd Judicial on an Indictment   found against him the said Riley for an assault and battery with intent to kill and further respondent saith not
